Reminder to puppy owners…

Posted in Main, sidenotes at 12:53 am by carrie

Before I moved out of my Mom’s house, we shared two lovely dogs. Barkley was supposed to be my dog. But, before long he was sleeping with my Mom and I was lonely. So I got myself a little white dog and named him Biscuit. When it was time for me to move out I was going to take Biscuit, but… alas, the three of them had created a bond that I wasn’t about to break up. But now I have Miss Nutmeg and all is well in the world of furry friends!

Barkley is the oldest and wasn’t thrilled when Biscuit came along. We came up with the name Sir Barkley John because he sometimes evokes this attitude of royalty coupled with lots of stubbornness. He poses well for pictures and knows he’s cute.
Little Biscuit is the baby huey of the family. Cute, rotund, happy as can be but kind of… well… he’s un-smart. Again, he’s adorable!

Biscuit’s little cheek was recently all swollen and it looked like there was something wrong with his tear duct. Turns out he had a split tooth and it was infected! Poor little guy had the option of a root canal or an extraction so my Mom opted for the extraction.

So, here’s the reminder message… take your pups to the vet about every 6 months to have their teeth professionally cleaned… it’s very important! You should clean them at home often too! Meg has a deery lou toothbrush and she doesn’t mind when I go after her with it :)

this website is a little cheesy but it has some good facts on pet dental care.

Mother’s Day at Disneyland…

Posted in Fun Stuff, Main, outings at 12:16 am by carrie

Somehow, someway… we always seem to get at least 5 other people to aquire Disneyland Annual Passes. I’m not sure how this happens. Disney should buy us Dinner. So, getting the family out to the parks isn’t so hard, especially with wonderful tour guides such as ourselves ;) hehe! We started out at California Adventure (DCA) to grab fast passes for Soarin’ over California, only their best ride in the park. So, we had to kill time until then. This included lots of wandering and picture-taking. They have a mini-vineyard at DCA, including wine tasting and pretty good food. We happened to come in during their wine tasting/chef weekends or something. Lots of people stumbling around.
Pam is my Mom’s good friend from Santa Barbara. They actually met there when they were 8 or so. Long story short, they’ve both moved all over the place but have managed to stay friends. How many friends can you say you’ve had for a lifetime? :) Pam is great… we’d love to have her around all the time!
Pam was in my Mom’s wedding back in 1970-something. My Mom is the cute short one 2nd from the right and Pam is at the far left. You can’t see it, but the bridesmaids’ dresses are purple gingham. Even in the 70′s my Mom wasn’t doing the “normal” thing with the avacado and orange :)
Here’s my Mom wearing her favorite jacket made out of a vintage table cloth. We’d love to carry these at the shop but they’d have to retail for over $100!!! I need to learn how to sew… quickly :)
In the afternoon, we headed over to Toontown for some drawing. We all sat down in front of Minnie’s house and started sketching. You can see my almost finished drawing at the bottom. I’m waiting for a scan of Babs’ and Pam’s drawings… that’s a hint if you two are reading! :)
For some reason, this look is priceless to me.
We ended the night with a lovely dinner at Granville’s Steak House at the Disneyland Hotel. There’s nothing like a wonderful dinner and the perfect dessert. We all had steak, salads and shared these sweets… their creme Brulee with an orange spun-sugar spiral that held 3 cookies and then this 6 layer ice cream cake thing. It was divine! :)
6 layers!

It’s great to see all of our drawings in a row… we were all looking at the exact same thing but had totally different ideas of what it looked like. None of us drew the polka dotted umbrella…. funny! I love all the color and textures! We all used watercolors and then layered different mediums on top after that. It was a very relaxing, cool, breezy afternoon. Just perfect!

That was our Mother’s day adventure! It was great! Hope yours was just how you wanted it to be!

Happy Mother’s day! :)

Prelude to Mother’s Day

Posted in business-a-go-go, Main at 11:12 pm by carrie

We received most of our mother’s day goods in february. We sold out of most of it in april. I scrambled to order some gloveables, jewelry, purses, aprons and other fun girly things. I got most of these things last wednesday and thursday (two days ago). So, I assembled my grand Mother’s Day display on friday night… while listening to jackfm and cursing at my shoes. I always wear the wrong shoes. I guess I’m not a very practical girl.

I loathed getting up on saturday (may 13). I was up until 3 am assembling 2 special orders, which were duplicates of the bracelets shown here. I had to abandon ship on one order because I couldn’t handle a dry mount heat press and a scroll saw at 3 am. I still very much enjoy my digits. So, I got up late and got to the store at 3 minutes after 10 am*.

*sidenote*: Sometimes, I’m 3-5 minutes late opening the shop. I’ve always been this way. As I’m making the left turn into our parking lot I can see if people are pacing out front of the store. I have nightmares about this. I do try my best to get my act together but these all night craft fests are… well… frequent. I do my best work at 3 am (notice the blog publish times) well, at least I think it’s good ;) hehe. Long story short… sometimes, I’m late. My punishment from the universe usually involves 20 large boxes delivered to my neighbor down the hill from me (since I wasn’t there promptly at opening). I should name my dolly “tardy slip”.

Anywho… the last 3 mother’s day sales have been just above average… higher traffic… nothing to sneeze at, but it would be a two or three on my shin and calf meter. What is my shin and calf meter? Well, since you asked… I stand all day. Not only am I seeing the start of some fun little spider veins, I have leg pain at the end of the day. I try to get the right shoes, but for some reason, they don’t help. I know I know… those thick mats the cast members use at Disneyland. Yes. I will get one. soon! Back to my story… I can usually tell how well we did on any given day by how sore my legs are. I usually have a scale of… 1 to 5. A “1″ would be a day of paying bills and sitting at the computer. A “5″ would be the day after thanksgiving or two days before Christmas. Today, May 13… my legs hurt… like a 4 or 5. We had a great day. Lots of new customers, people who saw our new window, ladies who got gifts from us and this was their first visit. I am in awe. It’s 1:23 am on saturday night/sunday morn and I am still in awe. Grateful. Very grateful :)

I took a different approach to our front window at violets are blue east this time. I put baby clothes in the window on one side with clothespins and on the other I did a similar ribbon swag with aprons and gloveables held with clothespins. What have I been selling a ton of? Gloveables and baby items. Rotate the windows. A lot. It works :)

Tomorrow we are going to Disneyland for Mother’s day with my Mom, Grandma (Nonee) and Pam from Santa Barbara. I’m hoping it won’t be too crowded. Fingers crossed. We may go and draw a bit. We’ve done the castle several times… I wonder what we’ll sit in front of this time. Ahhh, the corndog cart. Those things… shouldn’t be as good as they are. We are going to have dinner at Granville’s, see some firework action then head home.

Curse those corndogs and cheesedogs with their battered and deep fried goodness! If you see this cart on main street… stay far away!

my nemesis…

Posted in business-a-go-go, Main at 12:24 am by carrie

Special orders.

They find me during the day and catch me off guard.. surprise!

If you own a business and/or you make things… you’ve had to deal with the elusive special order. Sometimes it can be tranquil and go off without a hitch… but for some reason… if you are me… there’s usually a snag… or two… or more. I am writing about this in the hopes that I will, once and for all, put a rest to the special order, or the complications of.

1. The special order of a product from another company

I’ll give you three examples of how this doesn’t work.
Customer comes in and orders a set of teacups, it’s the end of March. I call the teacup company and, as I expected, I had to order a minimum of 3 sets of teacups. Okay, I think… they’ll sell, I’ll do it. Besides, I already told the nice lady I could get them. Oh, 3 sets of teacups doesn’t meet their minimum total order requirement. Okay… I’ll get the creamer/sugar set and teapot to match, three of each of course. Cut to 2 weeks later. I get the creamer/sugar sets, the teapots, but no teacups in sight. I call them… “they are backordered until the beginning of May”. Great. Call customer… she’s okay with it. It’s now May 13 and this customer has been in 2 times looking for her teacups. I finally called them yesterday… well, they came in but they have not received my payment for the creamer/sugar sets and teapots so they held my order. *yay* I should get them by the end of NEXT week.

Example two…

Customer wants 40-something of a candle holder for her daughter’s wedding. I order them. They don’t come in. What’s going on. I call the company and that particular candle holder has been discontinued, nobody bothered to tell me, even DURING the ordering process. Customer is angry with me. They send the alternate candle holders, I give customer a hefty discount because she doesn’t like them but doesn’t have time to get an alternate.

Example three…

Customer wants to buy 10 crystal knobs for her kitchen. We have 4 in her particular color. I order the knob company’s minimum of 20 knobs so we can get her 4. I don’t ask her for a deposit, I don’t know why, that’s totally my fault. I called when they came in, her 4 knobs are sitting on a shelf and the other 16 have not sold yet. That was over a month ago.

2. The special order of a product that someone else makes

My good friend Cathi makes awesome beads. They are handmade and it took her years to perfect her art. Customer wants 3 bracelets made, all similar, with a certain heart bead and crystals. I put the order together and make the bracelets using Cathi’s glorious beads. Customer comes in to pick up 3 bracelet and is horrified that one of the hearts is about 1/8″ smaller and not as thick as the other two. Because one is different from the others, she thinks I overcharged her. This took several weeks to make right because every single heart was wrong somehow. I had to keep the wrong hearts.

3. The special order of a product that I make

I make bath products, used to make candles, jewelry, assorted art products including hanging signs and I’ve done personalized signs for babys’ rooms etc and so on. I’ve filled lots of special orders, about 10% of them have some problem or another. Here are those examples…

I get a call from a customer who purchased a candle from me at a street fair in Ventura (I’m about 75 or so minutes from there). I can’t remember exactly what it looked like (I would do different color “chunks” inside the candles, but I was rarely consistent) so she described the colors over the phone. She orders two to be mailed to her home. So, I make them. All different color chunks in a white base, spring rain scented. Mail them to her.. she calls me in a panic… “these are too bright!!! I wanted smaller chunks! your old one was soft and subdued, this one looks like mardi gras, and I need them for a gift tomorrow!” I shouldn’t have… but I actually stayed up late that night and DROVE them to her the next evening after work. I got a simple thank you and my old candles back. I think I made $30 on that before expenses.

The citrine necklace incident is one I remember well in my “special orders-scary stories” folder. The customer bought a necklace from me at a street fair and wanted another citrine that was a “darker yellow” as the main dangling stone. I bought one on ebay, it was too dark. Drove to a gem show for take two of citrine briolette… that was a strike out as well. Drove to Tarzana to a bead shop to find another citrine briolette… sent the finished necklace back to the customer for the third time. Strike three. Somehow, some way, after about 8 weeks we came to a compromise. The customer sent me a very lovely thank-you note. I’m still not sure if she was 100% satisfied with the necklace. I have a complex about citrine now. I buy it and keep it… just in case. I’m not that fond of the stone but when I see it, it’s like bigfoot or something… you better get it because you never know if you will ever see it again!

Okay, so I’m ranting a bit… but I just can’t seem to get this special order thing right! We made order forms with an area for me to draw the specs of the product in, and the customer would initial the “I am aware that this is a one-of-a-kind item and may have unique characteristics… etc”. Didn’t work. I scanned the components of the item I was going to make, printed that sheet out and made notes on it, and to my utter confusion, the final piece would be wrong again somehow. Wrong size, shape, color. I’m completely frustrated.

I think I’ve learned that you cannot trust the “big boys” of the wholesale world. I will not depend on them and trust they can get a product to me when they say it will be there. I will not make any promises. Repeat that :)

My solution lately? I make at least 3 of one thing, display them, and then it’s over. I can’t make that item again, in theory. I can make a variation of it, but it is available for purchase after it is made. Admittedly, I have taken a concept for an idea or place and blown it out of proportion, added fairy wings and glitter that wasn’t there before. I have received an item that was handmade from a friend and thought to myself, “I thought the fabric would be thicker, the item bigger or smaller, the outlines more hidden… ” blah blah blah. But that is their take on their art and I appreciate that. If I know someone put their heart into that little item x, y or z that I have in my hands, I will absolutely adore it. There are acceptions. The dryer duct pumpkins for example. I just can’t hang with those. (This pumpkin is actually nice, the ones I encountered… wow.)

Then there are the glorious special orders that boost your confidence and make you happy to be an artist. I can name quite a few, the roses I painted for Samantha, the furniture I painted for Cindy which turned into a sketch of her house. Countless birthday plates, jewelry items, ebay items, garden signs, gift baskets. So, really… it’s less than 10%. I’m still perplexed… how do I keep the 90% and lose the 10%? I’m going to keep investigating… until then, remember the work that is enjoyed and appreciated!

Three years have gone by…

Posted in business-a-go-go, Main at 2:27 am by carrie

and this learning curve sure has been steep!

This is going to be a long one… hopefully someone will find it useful and/or entertaining :)

2003

Signed the lease of this lovely building back in January 2003. Although it was happily occupied previously by the Desi Geestman foundation, it wasn’t exactly the look we were going for :) We started by tearing up the carpet, painting, painting some more, pulling up more flooring… and to our excitement, there was a plywood subfloor! Perfect for our barn-like flooring!
There was so much to throw out we just started piling it up everywhere. We started getting shipments of wood and other supplies. It was an endless shuffle game.
this is what half of 600 square feet of wood flooring looks like leaning up against the wall :)
*I* actually used this chop saw to put our floor in all by myself! It took a while to get used to it seeing as I enjoy having 10 digits and both eyes. It has a kick so I had to secure it to a piece of wood with some screws and really get used to the feel of the handle and how not to force the saw down too quickly! I now am the proud owner of 4 different kinds of saws and I’m open to adopting more :) I love power tools!
Almost done… hundreds of nails, 3 or 4 coats of white wash using a paint roller on a pole and 2 coats of crystal clear verithane later… This is the first flooring endeavor I have ventured out on… not too bad. Although, this last rain… argh… water leaked in and warped about 9 square feet of board :( It’s so so sad watching all your hard work buckle, crack and spit water when you slosh over it… although… we WERE going for that barn look….
And the counter. Oh, the counter. I have not met one person yet who can give me the history of this counter. I’ve been told this space was a copy store, an import clothing store, a sound engineering studio (?)… and this counter had been evolving throughout each tenant’s stay. My theory is in the top of that 80′s teal green formica top… there was hot pink neon with some sort of swoosh, zig zag or thunderbolt. I’m reminded of saved by the bell and sqeal, scream… screech… whatever ;)
We had our grand opening on April 19, 2003. We got about 2 hours of sleep that night. My Mom and I carefully tore down the tissue paper curtains off the windows at about 5am and skipped out into the middle of foothill boulevard to see our hard work from the outside… it was so surreal. To see our logo, items inside, little chandeliers lit up, all the wall colors glowing… I couldn’t help but tear up at the sheer fact that I wasn’t going to have to tear it all down tomorrow because the street fair was over. I didn’t have to fold up my little ez up roof and stick it in a bag. My fixtures were actual furniture, I had electricity, a working cash register and credit card machine! It was SO unheard of. And we had gotten our merchant account THAT day. What made us super happy (and a tad superstitious) was the fact that the last 4 numbers in the long string of 15 or whatever numbers in our merchant acct number happened to be the last 4 digits in our home phone number… that we had for over 25 years. See, I got chills… but, that’s just me :)
I got a very official-looking envelope in the mail from the city… I thought for sure I was going to jail for something. Perhaps lavender is outlawed on the sidewalks of Glendale or I should have made my door open in, not out. I was hesitant opening that envelope but was pleasantly surprised to see a certificate from the county with nicely watercolored violets on it! Your tax dollars hard at work! We have since matted and framed this item… and it hangs proudly in our little office area!
My first displays were… sparse. I enjoyed creating little vignettes. I would sketch them all out and spend hours arranging and re-arranging them. It’s easier than dusting! When we first opened, it was all about Paris, Eiffel towers and pink poodles. This look is still in demand but more antiquey. I can’t get enough Eiffel tower items in!! I guess we’ll just have to start making them ;)
That baby bassinet! We rolled that thing half way accross the Rose Bowl one fine Sunday morning. My Mom didn’t want it to ever sell, she was quite attached. That corner unit was the first piece of furniture we ever sold. We realized we could actually sell furniture. Didn’t even cross our minds. Since then we’ve sold the whole store’s furniture once or twice. I should buy stock in those crystal knobs. Wow… our baby section is so packed now, so different!
Back in the day I used to take hours painting furniture. We would only get a few customers during an average weekday so I spent my time putting little details on the furniture. This vanity has a matching dresser and it has found a home with a loving local family. I wish I had the time to do more of these! I’m partial to hydrangeas… the depth and color really is appealing to me :)
Big sellers… fairy items and that blue sky clayworks stuff.
2004 and our first year is behind us. We had a modest christmas display and kept everything clean and simple. I branched out into little purses and accessories, some jewelry, not much. Now jewerly is our 3rd best seller. By May we got word that the space next to us is available. Before they can even put the sign in the window we were in. So, with the help of a handy man, we turned what used to be a chiropractor’s office into Violets are Blue, too! Or Violets are Blue East, as I like to call it.
We cut a nice arched wall in the middle of the two shops… it was so odd to stand on one side or the other and look in. I would stop someone in mid-conversation and say… “wait… there’s another shop there and it’s ours”. These next pictures are from 2005. For some reason I can’t find a ton of pics from 2004 or the renovation of that side. Just imagine a doctor’s office with lots and lots of dark wood paneling and an x-ray room. It was *that* charming
So, unlike Violets West, Violets East had compartmentalized rooms so I could have little themes in each. The front room was more of the living room/sitting room, followed by the kitchen (which I built a fake counter and sink into), the green room which was originally for all garden and fairy items but it changes a lot, and the last room was closed up and was going to be my office. Wrong. It turned into the Violet Cottage handmade bath section. Quick sidenote… I sold my jewelry and soap for a few years at street fairs and boutiques (thus the happiness of not having to take a booth down) across california. We did san diego, big bear, montrose… almost san francisco but it was getting ridiculous! I was still in school at Calarts and did this as a side income thing. Looking back… it was more for fun and believe it or not… exercise. I got more muscle lugging 40lb boxes of soap than doing anything else! :)
This is the “green” room.
Oh how I love Midwest of Cannon Falls and Bethany Lowe Designs. Their holiday items are the best out there! I had fun with this mantle last year. I put paper pulp glittered icicles on the mantle and lit them from below. We had so much glitter in here…I’m so glad they kept this look for 2006!
This is sort of hard to see but we had all pink, blue, green and white items in this area. Sort of a new french/country/victorian-ish thing going on. Chintz and polka dots, glass birds with white feathers and bottle brush trees with pearls. Very sweet!
And here is what people saw driving by at violets are blue east. We had a lime green, bright purple and silver tree in the window on one side and three green trees giving a forest feel on the other. You should have seen our electric bill for that last two months. Ouch.

So, the ups and downs of 2005 brought us into 2006. In 2006 we had a window blow in during the wind. Got that call at 3am from the alarm company… “ummm, ma’am… you’re alarm is going off, we arent sure why… ” Found out why in a hurry. The wind had thrown something into our window and it shattered inward. Taking a full display of st. patrick’s day teacups and teapots, violet teacups and a lamp down with it. Argh. We pulled up and a cop was in front shining his light into the store. We Got in and turned the alarm off, which was quite loud, thankfully. We waited an hour or so for the board-up people to come. I happened to go to high school with a family who did this sort of craft so their name popped into my head as I dialed 411 in the noisey wind, crying. Did I mention the power was completely out and our chandeliers were swaying? Long story short, about $1000 damage later… it was fixed and done. About 6 weeks later the door, which I believe got pushed open during our wind escapade, broke as a customer was leaving the building. It weighs 100 lbs. I’m so glad it didn’t fall on her! I propped it up and had to wait 4 hours for a repair guy. *note* the company that came out to fix the door told me it would cost twice as much because they would have to board it up first and fix the door later. They had the part but could get twice the money if they have to make another trip out. I called another company who… surprise… had the part. So, I bargained with the first company who ta-da! had the part miraculously appear. Funny how that works.

We now have 50 consignors. I’ve had some slight issues that have been ironed out over the years. I am a one woman show. I cannot do absolutely everything. Some days I think I can and I hope that I can put smiles on the faces of the masses, but alas, I cannot. I do try though, trust me. I found the words I was looking for in another blog. If you have ever considered being a consignor, a crafter, doing craft shows, selling your wares to anyone besides your aunt mildred… read this blog! It will be my mantra going forward in the crafting world. We want to help you help you and help us. We should be a huge circle of compromise, respect, love and shared joy of crafting and handmaking goods (or the treasure hunt for the vintage-seekers). Again, please read this… Alicia has a way with words I will never have, but will aspire to :)

Okay… one hour later and I guess I should get some sleep! I think my next rant will be the enormous piles of cardboard that I accumulate. I have to shuffle it out of the store, into my car and then take it to a recycling plant, recycling trash can or find a way to make forts with it all. I made $16 on over 600 pounds of cardboard… that’s right SIX HUNDRED pounds. I’ll take pictures next time… it’s amusing.

Thanks for listening!!!!!! :) If you have any business questions, feel free to ask… I may or may not have an answer, but I’ll take a crack at it! ;)

Take me to your cheese toast…

Posted in Fun Stuff, Main at 11:36 pm by carrie

I was sitting at the coffee table enjoying some fabulous cheese toast (the Clearman’s/Northwoods Inn Recipe, although the recipe I found earlier included lemon juice) and who pops her head up to get some? Miss Meg:

She’s almost 3, and it huge now, but once upon a time…

Happy to report, I got the chairs! They need more love than I thought… but I happened to go back on a day when the “pink tags” were on sale… so it may have been worth it in the end :) And I found a lovely compote, so I’m thrilled.

Tore the shop apart today! There are bags, cardboard and purses sprinkled everywhere. I think it is coming together and the aprons from Sommer Designs have been added in nicely! Just in time for Mother’s Day! I guess I should put up the 4th of July now and just be done with it! I got some AWESOME stuff from Bethany Lowe Designs!!! I have 8 ladies on the bethany lowe call list. I am instructed to call immediately after Brian (our UPS guy) walks in the door… if you want to be added… hurry up! hehe! (and I call alphabetically, so make up a last name that starts with an “A”) ;)

I also got a ton of jewelry the other day so I have about 80 pairs of chandelier earrings to price… argh. Seems shell chandelier earrings are back this season… but with more rhinestones. Nathan ran out to get a movie for entertainment! yay! OH! and Cathi made some HUGE cupcake beads that I need to add little lobster claw clasps to. I think they’ll be good for hanging off purses, hoodies etc and so on. I’ll put pics up of those soon, too! Wow, I’m all over the place tonight! Must be the cheese toast ;)

I may want another puppy soon… why can’t they come house-trained with little to no desire to chew up my expensive under-things and photo albums?

over and out! :)

chairs!

Posted in Fun Stuff, Main at 12:23 am by carrie

I’ve been working on displays around the shop and it seems we are lacking cool chairs. The only reupholstering I’ve ever done required scissors and a staple gun. I’m hoping for a more finished look. This will require someone who knows what they are doing and a few bucks on my part. I did find a chair similar to the one below in a lovely 70′s burnt orange. Eugh. Hopefully I can grab it and get it some professional help at a good price! This one is from the May issue of Domino Magazine (if you haven’t checked it out, you really should! It’s a great magazine!):

I also found these chairs at a local thrift shop… hard to see in this picture but they have a beautiful lattice work on the back of each chair…

I’m not sure if I want to go with the popular dark turquoise blue and brown or gray… or something more feminine and fun :) These chairs only require a staple gun so… phew! Only problem is, I didn’t purchase them yesterday because I wasn’t driving the van. So, I’m going to high tail it out of here in the morning and hope they are still there! Fingers crossed, especially since gas is almost $4.00 a gallon and the van gets 13 miles to the gallon! ouch!

My next post will be discussions of my new Mother’s day display (which is totally late!), how the chairs are coming and what colors I’m using, oh… and I want to start thinking about food to serve at our 3rd anniversary party coming up! yay! Cupcakes for sure! But we always have a ton of sugar, need something to round that out!

Violets are Blue turns 3!

Posted in Events!, Fun Stuff, Main at 3:14 am by carrie

It’s the shop’s 3rd birthday!!! I can’t believe it’s been that long!

My Mom and I have been crafting since the mid-80′s together under the name “Violets are Blue”. I need to find some old wreaths and drawings from that era. I’m sure they’ll be timeless ;)

We are having a birthday celebration on Saturday May 20th from 10am – 6pm. We’ll be serving goodies, giving away special gifts and having a storewide sale! I’ll be sure to post pictures from the event later on! :)

We’d love to see you! :)
Please shoot me an email if you would like to be added to the mailing list. Please include your email address as well! :) You can send that to: jointheparty@violetsareblue.net
